  • Connect your VPN. On the same line, if your device is connected to a VPN service, you can see a full Wi-Fi connection, even if you need to resolve a limited or no Internet connection. Try another VPN server or interrupt the VPN to see if the issue is resolved.
  • Make sure you have an IP address. You may be connected to a router that has full lanes but no Internet access if the problem is not connecting the router, but connecting the router to your Internet Service Provider (ISP).

If this happens, your router will work on your network, but because it doesn’t have Internet access, it doesn’t have a valid public IP address, which means you can’t send or request data over the Internet.

Another reason you may not have a valid IP address is that your machine is set to use a static IP address, but the router does not allow this IP address on the network, which happens when your static IP address mixes on a DHCP network.

The easiest way to solve this problem is to enable DHCP on the router and remove the static device address. For example, in Windows, you can do this in Control Panel by going to Network Adapter Properties and selecting Retrieve Automatic IP Address instead of Manual Command.

  • Open a browser. If you use a Wi-Fi hotspot, such as a hotel or airport, you may think that you can check your emails or browse the internet as soon as you have a strong wireless signal, but usually not as much. That’s how most hotspots are when you open a web browser; a hotspot page opens with basic information about which company provides the hotspot and what to do. Agree to the terms or enter the password provided by the company.

For example, some hotels allow you to enter a password on the hotspot page to access the hotel’s Wi-Fi, and airlines normally pay for internet access.

Wait for the hotspot page to be ready to set up your connection or redirect you to another site from which you normally have access to the site.

  • Try another DNS server. If your device is connected to a DNS server with bad data or is offline, even the strongest Wi-Fi signal is useless to gain access to the Internet.

Find another DNS server and change the DNS server settings on your device to see if the website is finally loading.

  • Check the MAC address filter. Another reason you are connected to Wi-Fi but do not have Internet access is when the router has set up MAC address filtering. It works by blocking the device from connecting to the router if they do not have a specific MAC address.

Therefore, even if your device may not have a problem showing that Wi-Fi is connected, any attempt to access the Internet or another network device will be blocked.

Because this setting usually only occurs on merchant networks, the best solution to bypass MAC address filtering is to ask for your MAC address to be added to the approved list.

  • Contact technical support. If none of these steps resolves the issue, you will need technical support from your ISP, router manufacturer, or computer or Smartphone manufacturer.
